On the Interaction Between the Magnetosphere and the Ionosphere

Abstract

Relations between certain structures in the magnetosphere and the ionosphere are discussed in the light of experimental evidence as well as from the point of view of the physical mechanisms thought to cause the structures. New evidence for the fairly frequent occurrence of magnetic-field-aligned electric fields is described. The interpretation of these data in terms of an electrostatic field in or near the upper ionosphere, associated with the temperature difference between the magnetospheric and ionospheric plasmas, is discussed in some detail in the main body of the paper.
