Abstract
The neovascular or “wet” form, of age related macular degeneration encompasses a wide spectrum of clinical features. Subretinal new vessels that appear well defined on fluorescein angiography portend a poor visual prognosis without treatment, but the results of three randomized controlled trials have demonstrated the therapeutic value of argon blue-green photocoagulation on visual outcome (1–3). However, in many cases, subretinal neovascularization may not be clearly visible on fluorescein angiography, although it is suspected clinically. Little information is available (4,5) on the natural history of subretinal new vessels not clearly outlined on fluorescein angiography, so-called “occult” subretinal neovascularization.
