Abstract
The surgical technique of kidney transplantation was fully established more than 30 years ago. The subsequent success of transplantation was hindered by inadequacies in both the understanding of the immune process and the therapeutic armamentarium. Only transplants performed between identical twins were initially successful. Most of the honour for the progress in kidney transplantation, with more than 50000 kidney transplants having been performed around the world, must therefore go to those who have increased our knowledge of tissue typing, immunology and immunosuppression.
