Abstract

Growth in the number and range of activities related to Phaseolus germplasm conservation and utilization over the past three decades has been accompanied by the development of an extensive network of communications between participating scientists. The network is perhaps the best developed of any similar initiatives among non-cereal crops. Coordination is informal, and depends on the dedication and professional interests of scores of researchers in institutions worldwide. Their efforts are focused on the free exchange of knowledge and germplasm, with the goal of understanding the diversity and variability of that germplasm to better preserve it and to maximize the benefits of its utilization in plant improvement programs.
