Abstract
The limits of the primary, secondary and, in part, tertiary gene pools have now been determined for faba bean, lentil, pea and chickpea, and useful traits have been found in each gene pool. Wild relatives in the primary and secondary gene pools can be crossed with the respective crop, but their hybrids may be partially sterile and show limited genetic recombination because of heterozygosity for chromosomal structural changes. Hybridisation with species in the tertiary gene pool is blocked, usually by post-fertilisation barriers. Better understanding of requirements for in vitro culture may enable these species to be exploited too.
