Abstract
One of the more persistent topics in recent grammatical research has been that of pronominial coreference. Linguists have gained important insights into the syntax of pronouns and into the structural conditions permitting coreference. In this paper, I will examine two important approaches to these problems, the transformational and the interpretive, and show various formal and empirical difficulties encountered by each. In the course of this examination, I will sketch an alternative theory of personal pronouns that appears to be simpler and more descriptively adequate.
