Abstract

Our understanding of stellar dynamos rests on detailed study of the Sun and recent observations of magnetic activity in other late-type stars. The interaction between rotation and convection leads to differential rotation and cyclonic eddies (possessing net helicity) which are parametrized in mean-field dynamo models. Nonlinear solutions provide examples of chaotic time-dependent behaviour and illustrate the development of complicated spatial structure. However, it is difficult to extrapolate from slow rotators like the Sun to rapidly rotating, highly active stars.
