Abstract

Differential swelling measurements give directly the difference between the free energies of mixing a solvent with an elastomer and with the corresponding linear chain polymer. In these experiments, the difference between the amounts of solvent vapor that are absorbed by crosslinked and uncrosslinked, but otherwise identical, samples of a polymer is measured at various solvent activities. According to the Flory—Rehner theory, the mixing and elastic contributions to the swelling free energy are separable and additive, and the measurements should therefore give the elastic contribution to the swelling free energy. Differential sorption experiments provide sensitive tests both of the theory of elasticity and of the Flory—Rehner additivity assumption. We review the theory and the experiments, and present new results that bear on the validity of the crucial assumption in swelling theory.
