Abstract
The Century soil organic model has been used to simulate land use effects on organic carbon and nitrogen and organic and inorganic phosphorus changes in soils of the Great Plains region. Two methods were used to verify the model: the first was the data from experimental stations where the effects of different rotation and tillage practices on crop products were studied over a 30 to 40 year period until 1947; the second was simulated data on cultivation effects on the soils of different textures in one climatic area over a similar time period. The model results were found to accurately simulate these changes, providing a new direction in the analyses of agroecosystems.
