Abstract

We investigate the propagation of a strong shock obtained in a time-dependent acoustic wave model of the outer atmosphere of Arcturus. Radiation damping due to CO and SiO molecules is considered. The development of the shock leads to a transition between a cool (molecule dominated) atmosphere and a hot chromospheric feature with a temperature similar to the semiempirical model of Ayres and Linsky. This behaviour suggests a possible explanation for the inhomogeneous chromospheric structures of late-type stars which are proposed by some observers.
