The Transplantation and Replacement of Thoracic Organs

Abstract

Successful heart—lung transplantation can be dated to the beginning of the present decade, with the first reported case performed for primary pulmonary hypertension in 19811. Since then there has been a steady increase in the number of operations performed2, and a broadening of the indications for the procedure. The indications for transplantation of the heart and both lungs overlap to a certain extent on the one hand with those for cardiac transplantation, and, on the other hand, with those for single or double lung transplantation. This chapter will include our experience of transplantation at Harefield Hospital, where the first heart—lung procedure was performed in September, 1984. Since that time, 176 patients have received heart and lungs, and, of these, nine have requried retransplantation for obliterative bronchiolitis.
