Abstract
The Collaborative Heart Transplant Study was set up early in 1985 (by Dr Gerhard Opelz in Heidelberg, West Germany) to collect and collate data provided voluntarily by a large group of centers performing heart transplantation. At the present time, 68 centers participate in this project. The database now consists of almost 5000 heart transplants. It is clearly too early to look at factors that influence longterm survival following cardiac transplantation, but information on medium-term survival is already becoming available.
