Global Source Strength and Long-Range Atmospheric Transport of Trace Elements Emitted by Volcanic Activity

  • Chapter
The Long-Range Atmospheric Transport of Natural and Contaminant Substances

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 297))

Abstract

It has long been recognized that volcanic eruptions significantly affect the earth’s environment and particularly the chemistry of the atmosphere (Devine et al. 1984, Kennett and Thunell 1975, Lamb 1970, Rampino and Self 1982). Depending on the type and the strength of an eruption, the release of volcanic gases and particles can affect the atmosphere on a local or regional scale or on a global scale. The more violent eruptions can occur every several decades or not for thousands of years and they can lead to important physical and chemical changes in the stratosphere. Large amounts of gas (mainly sulphur dioxide and halogenated acids) and dust (generally silicate ash) are released and may remain in the stratosphere for several weeks or for several years (Cadle et al. 1976).
