Abstract
Microbial biomass N was measured in 16 paddy soils, comprising three soil types, in laboratory incubation and under field conditions. The aim was to determine the effects of organic matter application on microbial biomass N in the soils and N uptake by rice. Biomass N was increased by continuous application of organic matter such as rice straw, cow manure compost and dried cow manure, but remained fairly constant throughout the incubation, in contrast to N mineralization. Nitrogen uptake by rice was proportional to biomass N, although the ratio of N uptake/biomass N varied according to soil type and was decreased by organic matter application.
