Abstract
Strontium (16 mM) in the nutrient solution suppressed bacterial wilt disease development in inoculated tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) seedlings to the same degree as reported with Ca. After two or five days in a nutrient solution containing Sr at 1, 4 or 16 mM with three inoculation groups (control, wound or inoculation to the stem), stem segments were sampled, and Sr, K and Mg concentrations were determined. Although no difference was seen with the inoculation group after two days of treatment, Sr accumulated in the inoculated segment after 5 days of treatment at the highest Sr concentration. Inoculation of the pathogen decreased the K concentration in the segment. These findings showed that accumulation of Ca (Sr) at the infection site was related to resistance to the disease.
