Abstract
The N2O emission in an onion field of clayey aquic soil in central Hokkaido was estimated to be 8 kg N ha-1 over the period from 1 April to 31 October 1995. This represents a loss of 3.0% of the total mineral N inputs. A large N2O loss of 6.0 kg N ha-1 occurred after an 80 mm rainfall at the beginning of August. Before the rain, N2O was produced only in the topsoil, while after the event, 19% of N2O loss occurred from the subsoil. But, the subsoil was not water-saturated completely. This N2O was probably produced in the interior of anaerobic aggregates after high NO3 leaching from the topsoil.
