Abstract

The resistance of root apical meristem to damage caused by Al-ions under controlled conditions, measured by the ability to continue root elongation after Al-shock, was used as an indication of aluminium tolerance of tested rye genotypes.

Four Al-tolerant and four Al-sensitive rye (Secale cereale L.) inbred lines were selected and used in dialel cross design to produce F1 seeds. The F1 seedlings were tested in nutrient solution screening test for Al-tolerance together with parental lines and its sublines. The seedlings were Al-tolerant in most cases but in some cross combinations the F1 seedlings segregated into Al-tolerant and Al-sensitive at 3: 1 and 1: 1 ratios. This corresponds with the results of test for parental lines which show that some of them are still heterogeneous with respect to Al-tolerance. It was concluded that aluminium tolerance in rye is a dominant character, controlled by relatively simple genetic mechanism.
