Abstract

We used ion-exchange resin capsules for measuring soil nutrient supply in a long-term experiment with rice in Tamil Nadu, India. Capsules were either placed in situ (ISI) or inserted into soil paste for anaerobic two-wk incubation at 30°C (INC). Soil mixing and/or intensive root-capsule contact caused significant differences in resin nutrient extraction between ISI and INC. Due to fertilizer application, resin N and K extraction in 5 cm was greater than in 10 cm depth. No significant depth differences were found for P, Fe, Ca, and Mg. Different fertilizer regimes caused differences in soil nutrient supply that were measurable by ISI and INC resin capsule methods.
