Abstract

To investigate the effects of molecular weight (MW) on the adsorption by anion exchange resin, a commercial humic acid (HA) was fractionated into four sizes: HA1 (<1,000 Da), HA2 (1,000–2,500 Da), HA3 (2,500–10,000 Da), and HA4 (>10,000 Da). The characterization reveals that aromaticity increases as the MW rises, while the negative charge follows the order HA3 > HA4 > HA2 > HA1. The adsorption maximum of HAs is 10.7, 18.8, 250, and 200 mg (total organic carbon, TOC)/g for HA1, HA2, HA3, and HA4, respectively. The results suggest that the effect of MW on adsorption is attributed to the different negative charge of HAs, and the effect of size exclusion is not observed.
