Functions of Natural Organic Matter in Changing Environment

Abstract

Artificial hydroxyapatite (Hap) is bioactive and has been used in a variety of biomedical applications. There are in the literature several routes used to produce Hap. However, there is a search for routes that can improve their properties and are more environmentally friendly. Thus, this chapter proposes a new route for the synthesis of nanohydroxyapatite, which uses the complexion ability of NOM and causes low impact on the environment. Samples were produced under different conditions of heat treatment and pH. XRD results showed that the pH has a major influence on the production of hydroxyapatite phase. The best conditions were found to be at pH 9.0 and 10.0. On the other hand, the process was not critically influenced by the heat treatment. These results were corroborated with FTIR analysis.
