Abstract

A water molecule contains one oxygen and two hydrogen atoms connected by covalent bonds. Despite its apparent simplicity, when a large number of molecules form a bulk liquid, it exhibits a number of anomalous properties [1]. These unusual properties are thought to arise from structure of water molecules binding to each other by hydrogen bonds. The conventional picture of bulk water posits that each water molecule is bonded on average to four others in a tetrahedral motif [2].
