The Appraisal of Caregiving Scale is a paper and pencil self-report instrument that assesses individuals’ perceptions of their experience as caregivers.
Description
The Appraisal of Caregiving Scale (ACS), developed by Marilyn Oberst and published for the first time in 1989, is a self-report measure uniquely designed to assess perceptions of the “illness-caregiving situation” (Oberst, Thomas, Gass, & Ward, 1989). Oberst asserts that the ACS is actually a measure of reappraisal as several the items focus on secondary appraisals and perceived effectiveness of coping strategies in addition to primary appraisals (Oberst, 1991). Based on this, she suggests it is best to use the scale after coping efforts have been initiated (Oberst, 1991). This focus on appraisals sets this measure apart from other scales used with caregivers, which typically measure caregiver burden in terms of actual behaviors caregivers need to perform in order to care for the patient.
