Beneficial Role of Taurine Against Myocardial Apoptosis During Ischemic Injury

Abstract

Taurine is one of the most abundant free amino acids in the heart, and exerts a number of cytoprotective actions, such as osmoregulation, antioxidant and modulation of calcium movement. Several lines of evidences indicate that taurine treatment is effective against myocardial ischemic disease. Anti-apoptotic effects of taurine have been described in myocardial tissue, which should contribute to the cytoprotective role of taurine against myocardial ischemia and ischemia/reperfusion-induced injury. Recent progresses have clarified a variety of signaling pathway that contribute to the anti-apoptotic actions of taurine during myocardial ischemia. In this chapter, we discuss the potential molecular mechanism underlying the anti-apoptotic role of taurine during myocardial ischemia.
