Riassunto
Il rapido progresso delle tecniche di imaging degli ultimi anni non è stato accompagnato da una corrispondente sensibilità verso i rischi che ne derivano. I dati statistici confermano un andamento in crescita della quantità di radiazioni ionizzanti assorbita pro capite per scopi medici nei paesi industrializzati. Seppure basso, il rischio di tumore per esposizione alle radiazioni a scopo medico esiste, soprattutto se si considera che gli esami vengono spesso prescritti e ripetuti in modo inappropriato e che questo comporta un cumulo di dosi nel tempo. I pazienti, tuttavia, sembrano ignari di questo rischio e anche i medici, in molti casi, lo sottostimano. Per evitare di ricevere radiazioni inutili e pericolose per la salute è necessario conoscere il rischio connesso a ciascun esame e bilanciarlo con i benefici diagnostici che ne conseguono [1].
