Abstract

The vascular endothelium constitutes an interface between the blood and the rest of the tissues. It occupies a good strategic position for fulfilling its metabolic and endocrine functions. The former include removal and inactivation of biogenic amines, nucleotides, eicosanoids, lipoproteins, kinins or conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, whereas the secretory activities comprise generation of prostacyclin (PGI2), nitric oxide (NO), endothelins (ET 1-3), plasminogen activators (t-PA), plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1), thrombomodulin (TRM), platelet-derived growth factor ß (PDGF-ß), von-Willebrandt factor (v-WF), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and many others.
