Riassunto

La PET è una tecnica medico-nucleare di imaging funzionale utilizzata per l’inquadramento diagnostico e prognostico del paziente neoplastico. Tale metodica consente di ottenere informazioni metabolico-funzionali grazie all’impiego di traccianti marcati con isotopi radioattivi naturali quali il carbonio-11 ([11C]), l’ossigeno- 15 ([15O]), l’azoto-13 ([13N]) e il fluoro-18 ([18F]). I traccianti sintetizzati rappresentano infatti i substrati naturali dei principali processi metabolici della cellula. Lo studio PET, complementare a indagini morfologiche quali l’ecografia, la radiografia tradizionale, la tomografia computerizzata (TC) e la risonanza magnetica (RM), consente la caratterizzazione metabolica di lesioni identificate — o non — con le metodiche radiologiche. La presenza e l’estensione della patologia neoplastica possono essere indagate nell’ambito di tutti i distretti corporei, in maniera non invasiva.
