Abstract

Although agriculture contributes about 13–14% of India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), its importance in the country’s socio-economic development goes well beyond this indicator as nearly half of the workforce (48.9%) is employed in agriculture. About 69% of the people live in rural areas, a large number of whom are poor and mainly depend on agriculture and allied sectors for their livelihoods.
