Abstract
Among the temperate fruit crops, there is a good scope for biocontrol of the codling moth with repeated release of Trichogramma embryophagum Htg., while the Indian gypsy moth is subjected to varying levels of natural parasitisation by Anastatus kashmirensis Mathur. In tropical fruits, against lemon butterfly, both Trichogramma chilonis (Ishii) and Telenomus incommodus Nixon provide varying levels of natural parasitism around the year, with T. chilonis offering scope for augmentative biocontrol. Eggs of fruit sucking moths are found to be naturally parasitised by Trichogramma, Telenomus and Ooencyrtus. The pomegranate fruit borer (Deudorix spp.) is subjected to substantial egg parasitism by Trichogramma (mainly T. chilonis) and Telenomus sp., besides Anastus sp. to some extent, while mass release of T. chilonis has shown varying levels of impact. Ber fruit borer, Meridarchis scyrodes Meyr. appears to be effectively controlled by T. chilonis releases. In the future, importation of effective egg parasitoids and inundative release of promising native/exotic species, besides use of selective/safer pesticides towards improving the IPM potential by augmentation and/or conservation of egg parasitoids, should receive more research attention.
