Abstract
Endoscopic stent placement is an efficacious treatment for patients with malignant extrahepatic, biliary stricture. Metal stents have a significantly longer patency than plastic stents. Furthermore, metal stent placement contributes to costeffectiveness, shorter duration of hospitalization, and reduction in the frequency of repeated endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. The indication for plastic stent placement as palliative therapy for unresectable malignant biliary stricture is drainage for patients with an expected survival of less than several months. Because patients who have undergone metal stent placement have a shorter survival period after stent occlusion, additional placement of a plastic stent is acceptable.
