Abstract
Sugar chains of glycosphingolipids (GSLs) can be released by ozonolysis or periodate oxidation; however, these methods are not suitable for alkaline-sensitive GSLs because they are performed under alkaline conditions. Furthermore, these chemical procedures are time-consuming, somewhat troublesome, and of low yield; and thus a simple and reproducible method for obtaining intact sugar chains from GSLs is required. This section deals with the release of sugar chains from GSLs by endoglycoceramidase (EGCase, EC3.2.1.123).
