Abstract

Distinct and separate arcuate bands formed by Salix species are frequently observed near low-water channels on bars (MeKenny et al. 1995; Okabe et al. 2001). Each band of willow community seems to be evenly aged with gaps in ages between the bands, and tree age increases moving inland from the stream, as reported for cottonwoods (Everitt 1968; Noble 1979; Bradley & Smith 1986).
