Summary
Somatoform disorders lie on the boundary between medicine and psychiatry and have been relatively ignored by both. Though quite common, these disorders have received little systematic research. Misdiagnosing these disorders results in morbidity, expense, and the possibility of missing more treatable medical or psychiatric diagnoses. The differential diagnosis of somatoform disorders is a difficult but important task that we will discuss in some detail.
