Abstract
Although there are various kinds of modern treatment for intracranial arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), surgical excision has remained the most efficient and reasonable form of curative treatment, and should be of first choice whenever possible. Since the development of microsurgical techniques, both the operability and the sucess rates of complete excision of AVM have improved remarkably. In my series of 132 cases of AVM upon which I have operated directly, the rate of complete excision is 93% and the overall operative mortality is 0.8%. It is my policy now to advise excision of AVM for every case, provided the predicted surgical outcome is not poorer than the expected natural consequence of the AVM.
