Abstract
Effectiveness of extracranial-intracranial bypass (EC-IC bypass) has been hitherto reported from various points of view such as increase of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF), improvement of cerebral metabolism and of neurophysiological function, although its effectiveness in stroke prevention could not be proven by the International Cooperative Study [5–7, 9]. This paper is to present our experience with and the importance of the EC-IC bypass as a new source of collateral circulation by analyzing the degree of postoperative hemodynamic changes over time; dilatation of the superficial temporal artery (STA) after construction of an EC-IC bypass, its feeding territory in the middle cerebral artery (MCA), and rCBF.
