Effects of Transport Currents and Static Magnetic Fields on Harmonic Generation in YBCO Ceramics

Abstract

The granular nature of ceramic YBCO materials is known to lead to non-linear effects in the a.c. susceptibility. These are associated with the different superconducting characteristics of the inter- and intragranular weak link system. The presence of either external magnetic fields, or transport currents can severely change the magnetic nature of the sample and hence the observed non-linear properties.

Chief among these effects is the generation of harmonics of the drive waveform in a simple a.c. susceptibility measurement. We have observed these changes for a range of d.c. transport currents and magnetic fields applied during the susceptibility observation. The results have been interpreted in terms of the critical state model.
