Abstract
To elucidate the skeleton formation mechanism in scleractinian corals, microstructures of the surface and inside of skeleton have been investigated using petrographic and scanning electron microscopic techniques (1,2,3,4). Studies showed the basic trabecular system of scledodermites were composed of several bundles of needle-like aragonite crystals. Development of the ridge and side surfaces of the actively growing portions of the coral skeleton remains to be studied.
