Resection of Tumors of the Pelvis and Proximal Femur

Evaluation of Survival, Local Recurrence and Function

New Developments for Limb Salvage in Musculoskeletal Tumors

Summary

Nineteen patients with bone tumors of the pelvis and proximal femur were treated surgically by resection and reconstruction. Histological types included five primary bone tumors, 11 metastatic lesions, and three benign tumors. At review, four primary bone tumor patients were still alive without evidence of disease. The length of the observation period varied from 2 to 8 years. Seven of the eleven patients with metastatic bone disease had died. Their average postsurgical survival time was 17.2 months. All patients were able to walk with or without a cane. Failure of an endoprosthesis occurred in one case. According to the Enneking Evaluation System, the functional results in proximal femur replacement were one good and one fair in primary malignancies and nine good in metastatic disease. Both pelvic replacements and the three total femur replacements scored fair. There were two good and one excellent scores among the benign lesions (two pelvic, one proximal femur).
