Abstract

Strongly weathered soils, such as Acrisols and Ferralsols, are found in the humid tropics. Due to the high rate of weathering under the constantly warm, humid climate of this region, these soils consist mainly of kaolinite, a highly weathered clay mineral that is composed mostly of silica, aluminum, hydrogen, and oxygen (Jordan 1985). As a result, these soils have a low potential for holding nutrients or supplying mineral nutrients through mineral weathering, and these characteristics are recognized as one of the most outstanding features of tropical soils. In East Kalimantan, the major soils are Acrisols derived from Neogene sedimentary rocks (Ohta and Effendi 1992).
