Growth of Tl-1223 crystals on silver substrate by two-zone annealing method

Abstract

For the application of Tl-1223 superconductors, the crystal alignment on a metal substrate is needed to obtain high transport Jc. To fabricate a Tl-1223-coated conductor, we annealed precursor of Tl-1223 by two-zone annealing method. By using this process, we observed 1mm long colonies of similar oriented grains. When we measured the a-axis directions of each colony over the whole sample, the colonies had three different directions, 0°, 30° and -30°, to the longitudinal direction of the silver tape. Because these growth directions agreed with the a-axis directions of (320) and (210) of silver tape as substrate, we confirmed that selective growth of colonies is influenced by silver substrate. Growth of Tl-1223 colonies on the (hk0) of silver substrate by two-zone annealing process can be useful in improving in-plane orientation of Tl-1223 superconductors.
