Dass ein Mathematiker manchmal auch als Detektiv arbeitet, lernt man schon in der Schule. Zum Beispiel könnte x eine unbekannte Größe sein, von der man nur weiß, dass 3x+5=26 ist. Sherlock Holmes, übernehmen Sie! Wenn 3x+5 gleich 26 ist, muss 3x=21 sein, und damit ist x als die Zahl 7 entlarvt.
