Eine Abbildung oder Funktion f ist eine Zuordnung, die jeder Zahl x einer gegebenen Zahlenmenge D eine Zahl y einer Zahlenmenge W zuordnet. Die Zuordnung ist eindeutig, das heißt, jeder Zahl x wird genau eine Zahl y zugeordnet. Man schreibt dafür y = f(x) oder manchmal auch x ↦ f(x). Man nennt f(x) das Bild von x und umgekehrt x das Urbild von f(x).
