Summary
Intracystic injection of colloidal Rhenium-186 has been introduced at our unit for endocavitary irradiation of cystic craniopharyngiomas and actively expanding glioma cysts in 1973. Follow-up of 13 craniopharyngioma and 29 glioma cysts treated with Re-186 tili July 1982 shows that fluid formation has been consistently stopped in all craniopharyngiomas and low grade gliomas with progressive shrinkage of the formerly expansive cysts. In high grade gliomas progression of tumour-growth usually rapidly compensated inactivation or shrinkage of cyst. No early or late side-effects were observed in craniopharyngiomas. In glioma-cysts dose dependent regressive perifocal edema appeared 1–2 months after injection in 5 cases. No clinical complications were noted after leakage to CSF spaces observed more frequently with craniopharyngiomas (15%) than gliomas (1.6%). Late reexpansion of cyst observed at 1 to 4.5 years in 8–10% was treated successfully in all cases by a second injection. Long term follow up data seem to Warrant further use of intracystic injection of colloidal Re-186 as this treatment appears to achieve consistently satisfactory results with minimal risks in the treatment of cystic craniopharyngiomas and expanding cyst of low grade gliomas.
