Abstract

The field of two-body photoproduction is a rather old one. In fact, single pion photoproduction off hydrogen is experimentally studied since more than two decades and also some of the theoretical ideas go back to that time. But this field is still a very progressive one. Within the last ten years our experimental knowledge about photoproduction of pions and other pseudoscalar and vector mesons at high energies has been largely improved and by now also some of the corresponding electroproduction experiments have been performed at various laboratories. The experimental study of these exclusive electron reactions has been stimulated by the behaviour of the total hadronic electroproduction cross section in the deep inelastic region. There it was observed that the cross section falls off very slowly with k2 and one wanted to see wether the exclusive channels at high energies show such a behaviour too. By high energy we mean an energy above the resonance region, s > 5(GeV/c)2, and during the course of my lectures I shall confine myself to such high energy reactions. The resonance range will be covered by the lectures of Professor Rollnik.1

Lecture given at XIV. Internationale Universitätswochen für Kernphysik, Schladming, Austria, February 24–March 7, 1975
