HyperIBIS — a Tool for Argumentative Problem Solving

Abstract

Many problems in the field of politics and design cannot be solved by using straightforward algorithmic methods. These problems are characterized by the collision of different judgements and different interests. Typically those problems are solved by weighing up the different arguments and finding compromises. This is done by a discourse between the involved groups. A hypertext based system called HyperIBIS will be described that supports the structuring and documentation of discourse on such problems. The system rests upon a theoretical approach called IBIS that has been first introduced by Rittel and Kunz.
