Zusammenfassung
Am 19. September 1991 wurde am Rande des Similaun in den Alpen in etwa 3.200 Metern über dem Meeresspiegel eine Gletschermumie gefunden. Dabei handelte es sich nicht, wie sonst bei Gletscherleichen üblich, um eine sogenannte Fettwachsleiche, die immer dann entstehen, wenn Leichen in feuchtem Milieu unter völligem oder teilweisen Luftabschluß längere Zeit liegen. Vielmehr handelt es sich bei dieser Leiche um eine Mumie, also um eine vollständig getrocknete Leiche. Durch die Natur einiger Begleitfundstücke, wie z. B. eines messerartigen Gebildes mit einer Klinge aus Stein, kam die Vermutung auf, daß es sich um einen sehr alten Fund handeln könnte. Bestätigt wurde dies durch die von mehreren Instituten ausgeführte Datierung mit der 14C-Methode, die der Mumie ein Alter von etwa 5.300 Jahren zuordnet /3/. Der Fund dieser Mumie stellt eine archäologische Sensation dar, da noch nie ein so alter, durch Mumifikation gut erhaltener Leichnam zusammen mit den Gegenständen seiner alltäglichen Ausrüsttung gefunden wurde. Zwar existieren ebenso alte ägyptische Mumien, aber diese wurden künstlich mumifiziert.
