Abstract
These lectures were supposed to be about Ũ(12) [1]. I shall only mention Ũ(12) towards the end. What I wish to do is to study in more general terms the relationship between internal symmetries and relativistic invariance, and then to discuss in this light the achievements and also the limitations of Ũ(12) and related theories. The work I am reporting was done in collaboration with Professor G. Feldman. Much of it is already in the literature. In particular, a great deal of what I have to say comes very directly from extremely elegant and informative papers of Weinberg [2].
Lecture given at the V. Internationalen Universitätswochen für Kernphysik, Schladming, 24 February – 9 March 1966.
