Abstract
On sustaining severe brain damage, there generally follow disturbances of metabolic regulation. The latter is a central function of the diencephalon10 and brain stem7. Thus several groups have monitored various blood metabolites e.g. hyperglycaemia12, azotaemia2, lactatepyruvate8, proteins2, 4 and lipids3 with regard to prognosis after head injury. However, though mentioned2,12, blood and CSF osmolality have not been systematically investigated despite the known role of the diencephalon in osmoregulation13,15 . We therefore investigated the course of blood and CSF osmolalities, correlating them with clinical and other biochemical data.
