Zusammenfassung
Die Geschichte der Elektrokonvulsionstherapie (Elektrokrampftherapie, EKT) beginnt nicht am 11. April 1938, als Ugo Cerletti (1877 – 1963) und Lucio Bini (1908 – 1964) mit wenigen Helfern heimlich und inoffiziell die erste EKT bei einem schizophrenen Patienten durchführten — so nach Binis privaten Aufzeichnungen, die im Archiv der Menninger Foundation aufbewahrt werden — [5]. Sie beginnt auch nicht mit der ersten offiziellen EKT am 15. April 1938, zu der Cerletti eine größere Anzahl von Augenzeugen geladen hatte. Nach Lothar B. Kalinowsky (1899 –1992), der auch dazu gehörte, wurden die Assistenten der Klinik mit einem Trompetensignal dazu zusammengerufen [1]. Die Geburtsstunde der „epileptischen Behandlung der Schizophrenie“, d.h. die bewusste und gezielte Provokation eines epileptischen Anfalls unter therapeutischem Aspekt, der erste sogenannte „Heilkrampf”,wurde von Ladislaus von Meduna (1896 – 1964) am 23. Januar 1934 durchgeführt. Von Meduna gab einem Schizophrenen im katatonen Stupor, der seit 21/2 Jahren mutistisch war und künstlich ernährt werden musste, die erste Kampferinjektion in Öl i.m. zur Auslösung eines Krampfanfalles, der 45 Minuten später einsetzte und 60 Sekunden dauerte [55]. Vorausgegangen waren Tierversuche an Meerschweinchen, mit denen von Meduna die „Kampferepilepsie“, die sehr ähnlich abläuft wie die des Menschen, studiert hatte, und die erst am 4.6.1934 abgeschlossen wurden [54].
