Abstract
Skin grafts and free flaps share the same origin: both were first obtained about 3,500 years ago in India. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, specifically in 1804, an Italian surgeon by the name of Boronio was the first to successfully transplant a full-thickness skin graft in a sheep, and in 1869 Reverdin obtained skin grafts and transplanted them successfully in humans. Thiersch was the first surgeon to use split-thickness skin grafts for the reconstruction of large wounds in 1886.
