Abstract

In summer 1978, Northern Greece and especially the city of Thessaloniki suffered from a series of earthquakes. The heaviest with a magnitude of M = 6.5 according to Richter’s scale took place on June 20. The shocks of May 24 (M = 5.8), June 19 (M = 5.2) and July 5 (M = 5.1) should also be pointed out. These earthquakes have caused extensive destructions in the villages of the region and in the city of Thessaloniki where the collapse of one single building costed 40 human lives.
